# Which Notion plan does a design studio need in 2026? Free vs Plus vs Business, guests and AI credits

Most small design studios can run a Notion template on the Free or Plus plan. Choose Plus when you need more guests or larger uploads, and Business only when you want its admin controls or its AI credit allowance. Prices and limits change often, so confirm them on notion.com/pricing before you buy.

## Key takeaways

- A template needs no paid plan to duplicate; the plan matters for guests, file size, history and AI.
- Count the clients you will invite as guests: that, not features, usually decides Free vs Plus.
- AI credits are the 2026 change: reported allowances attach to Business and Enterprise seats.
- Third-party sources disagree on prices and limits, so use this page for the decision logic, then check notion.com.

## Do you need a paid Notion plan to run an architecture studio?

No. You can duplicate a Notion template and use it on the Free plan. A paid plan becomes useful when you invite many clients as guests, upload large drawing files, need longer page history or want AI features beyond a trial. For a solo architect or a two-person studio with a handful of live projects, Free or Plus is normally enough.

Last reviewed: 30 October 2026. Notion changes plans and AI packaging frequently, and the third-party price guides we reviewed disagree with each other, so every number on this page is marked as reported, and the decision rules are the part to rely on. Always confirm on Notion's pricing page.

## How do the plans compare for a design studio?

| Question | Free | Plus | Business |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Reported seat price | $0 | Around $10 per member per month billed annually (reported; some guides differ) | Around $20 per member per month billed annually (reported; guides range $18-$24) |
| Guests (clients, consultants) | Small limit; 10 is the figure most guides agree on | Higher limit; guides disagree on the number | Higher still, or as stated on the pricing page |
| File uploads | Capped per file | Larger uploads | Larger uploads |
| AI | Trial-level access reported | No equivalent monthly credit allowance reported | Monthly credit allowance per seat reported from 19 October 2026 (existing workspaces from 2 November 2026) |
| Best for | Solo or learning, few guests | Small studios sharing with several clients | Studios that want admin controls and AI credits |

Where a cell is vague, that is deliberate: the sources conflict and we did not read Notion's own pricing page for this review. Treat it as a checklist of questions to answer on notion.com.

## How should a studio think about guests and client access?

Guests are people outside your workspace, usually clients and consultants, who can see only pages you share. Count them by project, not in total: if five live projects each have two client contacts and one consultant, that is up to fifteen guest accounts, which is above the Free plan's reported guest limit.

1. List live projects: Write down each project and who outside the studio must open a page.
2. Count unique people: A person on three projects is one guest.
3. Compare to the limit: If you are within the Free limit with room to grow, stay free. If not, price Plus.
4. Share narrowly: Share a single client page rather than your internal databases; costs and supplier data should stay inside.

## What changed with Notion AI and credits in 2026?

According to third-party coverage, Notion moved Custom Agents to metered credits on 4 May 2026, listed at $10 per 1,000 credits and limited to Business and Enterprise. It then reportedly added monthly credit allowances per Business and Enterprise seat from 19 October 2026, with existing workspaces moving on 2 November 2026. Free and Plus were not reported to get an equivalent allowance. These details come from articles by Nuclino and Matthias Frank and a usage-pricing tracker, not from Notion, and may have changed.

What it means in practice: AI is no longer a flat extra. If you want agents running on a schedule, such as a weekly project summary, budget credits like a utility. If you only want to summarise meeting notes now and then, test the free allowance first. Before turning anything on, decide what client data AI may see.

## A decision table: which plan fits your studio?

| Your situation | Start with | Move up when |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Solo architect, 1-3 live projects, no client logins | Free | You need more guests or larger drawing files |
| 2-5 people, clients review pages online | Plus | You need admin controls or want AI credits |
| 6+ people or strict admin/security needs | Business | Enterprise features become necessary |
| You only want AI occasionally | Whichever fits above; trial AI first | Usage justifies metered credits |

A rough cost model: five people on Plus at the reported $10 per member per month is about $50 per month before any AI credits. Compare that to the hours you save, not to a software list price. If a plan saves one hour of non-billable admin a month, price that hour at your own rate.

## Where do our templates fit, and what do they not need?

We make ArchitectOS and InteriorDesignOS, one-time $39 Notion templates, so weigh this accordingly. You duplicate them into your own workspace and they work on a Free workspace; the plan limits above apply to your workspace, not to the template. Neither template includes AI features or agents; those depend on your Notion plan.

Our separate page compares free and paid templates and the setup-time economics, and the portal guide shows how to share one page with a client safely.

## FAQ

### Is the free Notion plan enough for an architect?

For a solo architect with a few live projects and few client logins, yes. You will outgrow it when you need many guests, large file uploads or AI beyond a trial. Check current limits on notion.com/pricing.

### Can clients view my Notion pages without paying?

Yes. Clients can be invited as guests to specific pages without a paid seat, subject to your plan's guest limit. Share a dedicated client page rather than internal databases, and check the current limit on Notion's pricing page.

### Do I need a paid Notion plan to use a template?

No. You can duplicate a template into a Free workspace. A paid plan only matters for guests, file size, page history and AI features, which depend on your workspace, not on the template.

### How much does Notion AI cost in 2026?

Third-party coverage reports AI credit allowances for Business and Enterprise seats from October 2026 and metered credits for Custom Agents at $10 per 1,000 credits. Sources disagree on details, so confirm current pricing on notion.com.

### Is Notion Business worth it for a small studio?

Usually only if you want its admin controls or its reported AI credit allowance. Most small studios do well on Free or Plus. Estimate seat cost against the admin hours saved before upgrading.
